The Nahuas indigenous group, particularly those in regions like Zongolica in Mexico, have a significant connection to coffee growing. Coffee cultivation has become an integral part of the economy and culture in many Nahua communities, providing livelihoods for families and contributing to the local economy. The region is deeply influenced by the rich, ancestral heritage of its people.
In regions like Zongolica, which have favourable climates and elevation for coffee cultivation, many Nahua families have small-scale coffee farms known as "cafetales." These coffee farms are often family-owned and operated, with traditional farming methods passed down through generations. Coffee growing has provided economic opportunities for Nahua communities, allowing them to earn income through the cultivation, harvesting, and sale of coffee beans.
Coffee farms in Zongolica are agro-ecosystems, which means the farms take into account the impact of the farming well beyond the farm and work to balance the energy and nutrients to preserve the regions biodiversity.
The twenty female farmers who contribute to this coffee each adhere to the same practices on their individual farms to assure a consistently good quality.
The women who make up the WPZ are also part of NKG BLOOM, an initiative of the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG) to ensure the long-term viability of green coffee supplies and provide smallholder farmers with the opportunities and resources they need to run their farms at full potential and to take steps to move out of poverty.
What is SHG coffee? SHG coffee" stands for "Strictly High Grown" coffee. It's a designation used in the coffee industry to indicate that the coffee beans were grown at high altitudes, typically above 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level. Coffee beans grown at higher altitudes tend to have distinct qualities and characteristics compared to beans grown at lower elevations.
SHG coffee is generally considered to be of higher quality due to the slower growth and maturation of the coffee cherries at higher altitudes. The cooler temperatures, reduced oxygen levels, and increased sunlight exposure at high elevations can result in beans with greater density, more nuanced flavours, and often higher acidity. These factors can contribute to a more desirable and flavourful cup of coffee.
