Coffee from Huatusco, Veracruz – Mexico:

The region of Veracruz has a long and fascinating coffee history — it was the first region in mainland America to cultivate coffee, dating back to the 18th century when the first coffee plants arrived at the port of Veracruz and took root near Córdoba.

Although Veracruz once produced the majority of Mexico’s coffee, it now contributes around a quarter of the country's total production. Yet its reputation for quality remains firmly intact, especially in areas like Huatusco.

The town of Huatusco, nestled in the Veracruz highlands, is one of Mexico’s hidden gems for specialty coffee. Sitting at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 metres, the region benefits from a unique microclimate of abundant rainfall, cool nights, and rich volcanic soils — ideal conditions for slow-growing, flavour-rich Arabica beans.

Huatusco’s landscape is made up of smallholder farms, many passed down through generations, where traditional, careful farming methods are still the norm. The region is known for cultivating varietals such as Bourbon, Typica, and Catimor, often processed using washed methods with extended fermentation, a technique made more challenging (but more rewarding) due to the cool, damp climate.

Coffees from Huatusco are celebrated for their refined acidity, balanced body, and layered flavour profiles, often featuring chocolate, nut, citrus, and stone fruit notes. While it may not be as globally famous as regions in Oaxaca or Chiapas, Huatusco consistently produces standout lots that showcase the heritage and potential of Mexican coffee.
